Bridging the divide: Integrating clinical trials with medical care

A substantial gap exists between the generation of knowledge through randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and its practical application in clinical care. Bridging this divide requires focused improvements in several critical areas. Ethical and regulatory frameworks must evolve to support the integration of clinical research with routine healthcare while maintaining high standards of patient safety and oversight. Additionally, study designs need to be more adaptable and relevant to real-world settings, ensuring that trials generate results that can be more readily applied in practice. Developing robust data infrastructure is also essential, enabling seamless data sharing and analysis across clinical research and healthcare environments. Finally, aligning incentives between clinical trial organizations and healthcare delivery systems is key to fostering collaboration and encouraging the incorporation of research findings into everyday care. Together, these areas highlight the current challenges and chart a potential course for enhancing the integration of clinical research with healthcare delivery, ultimately aiming to improve patient outcomes and bridge the knowledge-to-practice gap.
